FIJI has signed onto the Framework Agreement of the International Solar Alliance, as part of efforts to potentially establish itself as a regional hub of solar development.

This will secure greater access to solar financing, technology, research, and development opportunities, particularly in providing resources for properties in rural and maritime communities.

“As one of the founding members of the ISA, Fiji recognizes the importance of advancing solar technology as an alternative to the burning of fossil fuels that is contributing to the greenhouse gas emissions warming our planet,” Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said at the signing, held at the COP22 meeting in Morocco.

“This agreement will help lay the foundation for Fiji to take full part on the global solar revolution and give our people improved access to one of the fasted growing forms of renewable energy on the planet.”

Launched in late 2015, the ISA operates as a common platform for sun-rich countries (between the Tropics of Cancer & Capricorn) to cooperate and ramp up their solar energy usage, as part of efforts to reduce global greenhouse emissions while providing clean and cheap energy.

The Port Denarau Marina in Nadi is currently one of the world’s largest  marina-based solar plants.
